How does a gay man position himself in the tense arena between intimate and public, personal desire and its expression through behaviour, clothing, and sexual encounters? Consuming what’s on offer in this global fetish scene – at its events, through its online dating sites, pornography, and shops – promises self-realisation, belonging, transgression, and the satisfaction of desire. How does a man experience himself whose most personal predilections serve as currency in a market where the most urgent questions are ‘Who do you want to be? What do you need for that?’
The exhibition presents four of Jan Großer’s works that explore these questions, some of them with autobiographical references. He examines the codes of gay sexuality and identity through a mix of staged photography and participatory observation, not from the position of observing from above, but from being in the midst of things.
